Booker prize

Australian novelist could be first three-times winner, as fancied David Mitchell and controversial Christos Tsiolkas miss out

The Australian novelist Peter Carey was hailed as a modern day Dickens after he was shortlisted for what could be an unprecedented third ManBooker prize victory.

The New York-based Carey was shortlisted for Parrot and Olivier in America, his sprawling, funny account of a French aristocrat and his English servant's picaresque journey to 19th century America. If it wins, Carey will become the first ever three-time winner.

But there was no place for David Mitchell's The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet, or for Christos Tsiolkas, writer of one of the year's most controversial book, The Slap.

Announcing the shortlist poet Andrew Motion - who chairs the judging panel this year - said of Carey: "He is an extraordinarily clever, able writer. He is one of the writers, speaking personally, that I feel most pleased to be alive at the same as. It is like being alive at the time Dickens was writing, I think he's that good, and I think this novel is right up there with the best of his books. It is an amazingly ambitious, ingenious, clever, wonderful book."

The Canada-based Irish writer Emma Donoghue was shortlisted for Room, a story of a boy and his mother imprisoned in a tiny room for years, as were Orange prize winner Andrea Levy for The Long Song, about the last years of slavery in Jamaica and Howard Jacobson's The Finkler Question, a comedy about grief and Anglo-Jewishness. The list was completed by Tom McCarthy's experimental novel C, which tells the story of Serge Carrefax, a first world war radio operator who escapes from a German prison camp, and South African writer Damon Galgut's In a Strange Room, three stories of a man travelling in Greece, India and Africa.

But the omissions will attract almost as much comment as those that were included. Tsolkias's book, for example, which follows the consequences of a young child being slapped at a Melbourne barbecue, has divided readers.

One reviewer called it "unbelievably misogynistic" while Newsnight Review condemned it as little more than soap opera. Others have praised it as "riveting from beginning to end".

Motion said the row had had no bearing on the decision not to shortlist The Slap and re-reading it had made him think what "a bizarre fuss" there had been. It was "naive", he said, to label the writer misogynistic because he was writing a novel that had misogynistic characters.

The other surprise was the omission of Mitchell, who was shortlisted in 2001 and 2004. Motion said that while he was a huge admirer of Mitchell, this novel was simply not "as strikingly done as his previous books".

The judges first began by reading 136 books, Motion revealed, and two of those included on the shortlist had been "called in" - not having been submitted by their publishers - though Motion declined to say which they were.

Ladbroke's put Donoghue as 9-4 favourite, followed by Carey at 5-2. The outsider is Jacobson at 6-1.

Motion called The Finkler Question "absolutely one of his best books", adding: "It's very funny, it's very well-paced and it is about important things including the question of Jewishness and what sort of behaviour it both licenses and prohibits."

Of Levy's The Long Song, Motion said: "It is an extraordinarily ambitious rewriting of a historical story which has been approached by a number of distinguished writers including Toni Morrison. I thought this was … at least as good, if not better than Morrison's take."

McCarthy's C was "a book of outstanding range, ambition, narrative excitement and with a very interesting central thing for everyone to think about".

There is an argument that Galgut's book is not a novel, although Motion said he was happy for it to compete as one. "[Galgut] has rather languished in JM Coetzee's shadow, but that's a very long and interesting shadow to languish in."

The judges took two-and-a-half hours to cut the list from 13 to six.

Discussions were "friendly and passionate", said Motion. "There was no blood on the floor."

Jonathan Ruppin at Foyles praised all six books for their "lightness of touch, which means the reader doesn't get bogged down in something worthy or dull" but said that omission of both Mitchell and Tsiolkas was "a real shock". Simon Burke of Waterstone's tipped C to take the prize, calling it "a challenging yet dazzling novel", adding: "The news that David Mitchell has not made the shortlist will cause gnashing of teeth across the book world, but perhaps is a useful reminder of the independence and unpredictability of the Booker. This is still a hugely varied and exciting list. Our money is on Tom McCarthy. The more people that read [C] the better."

Bookmakers William Hill agreed, putting McCarthy as 2-1 favourite.

The winner will be announced on 12 October by a panel that also includes journalists Rosie Blau and Tom Sutcliffe, dancer Deborah Bull and author Frances Wilson. Last year's winner Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel is the fastest-selling Booker winner, with UK sales of around 500,000 copies to date.

Electronic cigarettes

The first step is to open up the box. Inside your E Mist kit, you will find:
  • 2x batteries
  • 1x atomizer
  • 1x wall charger
  • 1x USB charger and
  • 5x cartridges in Menthol or regular tobacco flavor (your choice)
Initial Use
  • When taking a puff on the E Mist device, please make sure you are talking LONG SLOW puffs. Do not puff on the E Mist device like a traditional cigarette
  • For optimal performance, it is recommended that you fully charge the batteries before using E Mist
  • You will notice that one of the batteries and the atomizer are pre-assembled along with an empty cartridge to protect the atomizer in shipping. Simply replace the empty cartridge with a full one by placing it firmly onto the atomizer. To make sure the cartridge is secure, twist it slightly.
  • There is no on or off switch. When using E Mist, the red LED light at the tip glows like a real cigarette to let you know its working.
Charging
  • The batteries can be charged using a standard wall outlet, or computer with USB port.
  • To charge using a wall outlet, simply plug the wall charger into the outlet and connect the opposite end to the bottom of the charger. When the LED light on the charger is green, the battery is fully charged. The LED light will remain red while the battery is charging
  • To charge using the enclosed USB charger, unplug the USB cord from the wall plug and connect one end of the cable to the charger and the other to the USB port. When the LED light on the charger is green, the battery is fully charged. The LED light will remain red while the battery is charging
Replacing Batteries
Each battery should provide approximately 1 day worth of full-flavored enjoyment
  • When the battery is depleted, the red LED at the end of the battery will blink 30 times intermittently.
  • To replace the empty battery, secure the cartridge in one hand and unscrew the battery from the atomizer.
  • Grab the fresh battery and reattach it to the atomizer. When you're finished, recharge the empty battery by screwing it back into the receptor.
  • Remember to unscrew a newly charged battery from the receptor when the light goes out.
Note: During use, the red LED light will flash 10 times to warn you that you are overusing your E Mist and you should take a break. This does not affect performance and does not mean you should recharge.

Replacing Cartridge
How it WorksOn average, each individual cartridge supplies enough nicotine and premium flavoring to accommodate approximately 80 - 100 puffs. When the cartridge no longer produces vapor, you'll know it's time for a replacement.
  • To replace the cartridge, hold the battery with one hand and pull off the empty one.
  • Check the atomizer for any residue and gently brush it aside using your fingers.
  • Firmly apply a full cartridge to the atomizer, twist it slightly to make sure it is secure.

Australian Websites Directory

Let me introduce you to my new Australian websites directory, no matter what you are looking for you will find! Whether it be video games or pets. We host a comprehensive listing to all local products and services. First off however, I would like to tell you a little more about why a website directory makes finding these products and services more convenient for you the user and you the advertiser.

The best Australian Web Sites

Unlike search engine such as Google and Yahoo, website directories are human edited. In other words they are not edited and categorize based on a system of complex electronic algorithms. They are edited by human hand and this makes them more human friendly.
 Australian Sites Top List
A site for products and services which come into a search listing with Google, has been searched electronically, but the products and services we list have been collated according to the experience, other people have had with them, and they are more localized.

Submit your url - Free Australian Directory

For example, you may be living in Western Australia and be searching for green friendly building supplies. Your Google search will bring up millions of entries. No user wants to read the listing past the first few pages, because it is time consuming. Whereas if you make use of a more specific search. The information you are searching for is more accessible.

It is also very important for advertisers to make use of website directories which are specifically designed for a certain target market. A company for Australia launching a website into the internet is essentially launching it into cyberspace and hoping for the best. But their site may float around in cyber space for ages before it is picked up by a major search engine, and even then the chance that it will be ranked highly are slim.

High ranking is essential to get the site onto those all important first few listing pages which many potential customers never look further than. To get the very best response for your website, you need it to be put into direct contact with the target audience. Currently the internet has more than 80 million registered sites and domain names.

It is vital for any business to have a web presence, but it is also, very easy to get lost in the melee. Listing on a website directory with more specific search parameters is therefore very important.

By the same token, more localized consumers who are searching for services and products will be able to find these in my Australian website directory. While it can be considered to be somewhat like a telephone book or yellow pages service, it is so much more. Theses directories are updated once a year, ours is updated on an ongoing basis.

Products and services are categorized, then sub-categorized, making it simple to find much more specific information for the user. The fact that we operated the site with a human hand, makes it simple for advertisers to use it as a forum to offer special promotions and discounts an also simpler for consumers to make use of theses, during the period they are valid. It is all about convenience really, and we live in a convenience driven world.

Game Dispute Hits Results

Chinese online gaming company  said its fourth-quarter net profit was near flat as a just-resolved dispute over its popular "World to Warcraft" game in China had cut into its margins.

http://www.biggainsnopains.co.uk

Netease said on Feb. 12 that the General Administration of Press and Publication, had finally given its approval for the company to operate "World of Warcraft" in China. Nasdaq-listed Netease's American depositary shares jumped 7.6% on the news at the time.

The approval for the online game, which is massively popular in China, ends a drawn-out turf battle between the Ministry of Culture and GAPP, which slowed the roll-out of the latest "World of Warcraft" game licensed from Inc. The game made its debut in China Sept. 19, but GAPP's announcement in November that the company should stop charging players had left its fate uncertain.

http://www.biggainsnopains.co.uk/casinos-jackpot-city.html

Despite being unable to charge players, Netease still had to pay licensing fees for the game to Activision Blizzard, which impacted its margins and profit. With regulatory approval now in hand, the financial picture is likely to improve, but the company didn't offer specific guidance on results going forward.

Fourth-quarter results were still better than Wall Street had expected due to an upswing in Netease's advertising revenue.

http://www.biggainsnopains.co.uk/casinos-william-hill.html

After Netease's earnings announcement, which came after the close of regular U.S. trading Wednesday, its ADSs rose slightly to $38.30 in after-hours trading, from $38.24 at the close of trading, as its results topped Wall Street's expectations. The ADSs are still down from September's high of $48.50 but are worth twice as much as a year ago.

Netease gets most of its revenue from games but also operates an online portal and a popular email service. That helped it weather the global economic downturn, even as the dispute over the "World or Warcraft" game roiled its business.

Chief Executive William Ding pointed to a strong sequential increase in advertising revenue "as our strategy to restructure our portal business operations and our other new marketing strategies launched in the beginning of the year began to deliver positive results."

"Looking ahead, we remain cautiously optimistic about the course of our advertising business in 2010," he added.

For the latest quarter, Netease.com reported net profit of 571.8 million yuan ($83.8 million), or 4.39 yuan (64 cents) per ADS, down from 575.9 million yuan, or 4.46 yuan per ADS, a year earlier.

The latest results included a net foreign exchange loss of 15.3 million yuan compared with a year-earlier loss of 22 million yuan.

Revenue jumped 58% to 1.25 billion yuan.

Analysts estimated earnings of 59 cents per ADS on revenue of $179.3 million, according to a poll.

Revenue from online games, which provides the bulk of the total, climbed 62%, while advertising revenue increased 64%.

Gross margin for the fourth quarter fell to 67.5% from 80.8%.

IrinaMitrovici-Viral Marketing Campaigns Drive Targeted Traffic

Viral marketing is a great way to use the power and nature of the Internet to reach a large number of people quickly and drive a continually growing flood of targeted web traffic to your website. With a successful viral marketing campaign, your website traffic could go from almost nothing to thousands of hits or even hundreds of thousands of hits per day almost overnight.

Viral marketing is a term used for marketing campaigns that grow and spread like a human or computer virus. In a successful viral campaign, people pass the marketing material on socially so that the marketing campaign grows like a snowball rolling down hill.

The basic idea of viral marketing is that you can increase your sales by increasing your targeted website traffic and you can increase your targeted web traffic by giving away or spreading something for free that people will pass on to their friends, family, or business associates like a virus.

Viral campaigns may spread through emails or eBooks that people pass on or through articles or viral videos that people pass on.

Microsoft's Hotmail service was probably one of the biggest early successes of viral marketing. Free web-based email is common today, but it was a new concept in 1996 when Microsoft first promoted Hotmail by adding a short advertising teaser at the end of its users' email messages. Who would have ever expected how big the results of this marketing campaign could be?

But as huge as the success of Microsoft's viral marketing campaign was for Hotmail, it only set the stage for what was to come during the 2004 American presidential campaign. Who can forget JibJab's flash animation political parody of George Bush and John Kerry singing, "This Land Is Your Land?"

By marrying the concept of flash video on the Web to viral marketing, JibJab took the Internet by storm. According to Internet statistician ComScore Media Metrix, the viral video received over 10.4 million unique hits in July 2004 - more than three times as many visitors as the official campaign websites of the two presidential candidates!

Now you may never experience the phenomenal success that JibJab did with one of your viral marketing campaigns, but the concept is simple and easily implemented. It works on the idea that if people like something or can profit from something, they will pass it on to their friends, family, and associates.

Viral marketing can be as simple as writing an article and having it published in article directories where newsletter publishers and webmasters may pick it up and republish it. Be sure to include an author bio or resource box at the bottom of every article that includes your name, your website link, and a call to action that entices people to click on your link. Webmasters and publishers are always looking for great content, so be sure to provide value.

Alternatively, you could send a funny, informative, or controversial newsletter to your subscriber list. Be sure to encourage people to pass your newsletter on with a short note at the bottom of your newsletter.

When people click through to your website, you would like to capture their email address and get their permission to contact them. Otherwise, they will often surf away, never to be seen again on your website.

Squeeze pages (pages primarily designed to get subscribers) are one proven way to do this, and offering people a free eBook or free report is a great way to get people to subscribe to your newsletter.

Want to kick your viral marketing campaign into even higher gear? Grant people the rights to give away the free eBook or report to their own customers or contacts. Be sure to brand the eBook or report with links to your website, so that anyone who receives it from others will find their way back to your website. Also, if you let your customers rebrand some of the links with their affiliate links or other links, they will really be motivated to pass the eBook or report on!

The Internet is perfect for viral marketing. This is one of the most powerful marketing techniques you can use on the Internet. Because many distribution channels are free (e.g., email and article directories) or relatively low cost (web hosting), viral marketing can be an incredibly cost-effective marketing technique. Once you have launched your marketing campaign, it can potentially grow and spread for years all by itself, making viral marketing possibly the most effective Internet marketing technique of all.

A Motorcyclist's Mid-Winter Frustration

One Christmas in the early 70's, I received a dazzling Huffy bicycle that continues to rank as one of my favorite presents of all time. This speed demon had a purple metallic-flake frame with shiny chrome fenders, ape hanger handle bars, and a special edition banana seat.  I couldn't wait to get outside to ride that beast!

Only one problem; that Christmas day there was so much snow and ice covering the landscape that it was impossible to ride.  For seven straight days I woke up, looked out the window and wondered if this would be the day, and for seven straight days the answer was NO!  I was so freakin' frustrated!

Fast forward some 30 years…

Today I find myself dealing with that same frustration all over again.
I have been unable to use any of my nifty stuff.  For seven days I have awakened, looked out the window and wondered if today would be the day, and for seven straight days the answer has been NO!  My frustration is accumulating like the 3 foot snow drift outside my window.

So what's a guy to do?  How should I deal with all of this pent up frustration?

Perhaps I should…

  • double up my meds.
  • lay in the snow while wearing my gear and make a snow angel.

Bad car credit loan

One thing that most people will end up dealing with at some point in their life is purchasing a car. Owning a car is necessary for a lot of people who are looking to get transportation to and from different locations. It is not uncommon for a lot of people to have to drive a great distance to and from work. A car is a necessary expense for a lot of people who rely on transportation to get to and from work. If you are looking to apply for a no credit check car loan, you will need to find the right lender for your loan.

The advantage that people with low credit scores have when it comes to applying for a car loan is that they are secured loans. Because they are secured loans it means that the risk is reduce for lenders because they have collateral for the loan. If you are to default on your loan, the lender would be able to seize the car back from you.

Although auto loans are secured loans, they are not 100% secured. Because cars have tendency to depreciate at a very fast rate, lenders do bear some risk when offering these loans. One way that you can get a no credit check car loan approved is put extra collateral against the loan. You can put up other assets that you may have, which will help to further reduce the risk that lenders face. Also, be sure to look around at the different loans that are available because you might find a good deal for your loan.

If you are interested in applying for a No Credit Check Car Loan the best place to start looking is online. Using the internet you can look up the different Auto Lenders that are available to give you a car loan.
